Your brain does not passively record the world like a camera. It predicts, filters, groups, compares and fills gaps. The fun part is that you do not have to take that on faith. Change the context while the thing itself stays the same and watch your own experience change.

Dark smudges can seem to appear at intersections away from your point of focus. Move your eyes and they flee.

Why this matters

One useful model: perception predicts, then corrects.

A useful way to think about perception is continuous hypothesis testing. Expectations about edges, lighting, gravity, faces, objects, language and causality meet incoming sensory evidence and get updated. Most of the time this works beautifully. An illusion is an edge case where the shortcut becomes visible.
